SOLANA BEACH — CALIFORNIA58 LOCAL. Solana Beach announced new educational signs at the pollinator garden outside La Colonia Community Center in late October. The garden is a certified Monarch Waystation; its new display explains the western monarch butterfly’s lifecycle.
What residents should know
Additional plant and pollinator signs were placed at La Colonia and near City Hall, with digital resources that visitors can access to learn about local species. The city says the effort forms part of a broader commitment to habitat restoration and environmental education.
The Climate and Resiliency Commission’s Pollinator Friendly City Subcommittee is also asking homeowners, renters and property managers to complete a short survey about local habitat and changes observed over the last five years.
Native plants can support pollinator species and may require less irrigation and fewer pesticides than some alternatives. However, the signs themselves do not measure an increase in monarch butterfly populations or establish that threats to habitat have been resolved.
Residents can find the survey and further information on the city’s October 26 announcement.
